Comparison
CHoCH vs BOS
Both describe price breaking a swing point, but in opposite directions relative to the trend. A break of structure (BOS) is with the trend: a new higher high in an uptrend or a new lower low in a downtrend, confirming continuation. A change of character (CHoCH) is against the trend: the first break of the swing that kept the trend intact, an early warning it may be reversing.
Change of character (CHoCH)
A change of character is the first break of a swing against the trend, an early sign the trend may be reversing.
Break of structure (BOS)
A break of structure is a move beyond the previous swing in the direction of the trend, which confirms the trend is continuing.
Side by side
| Aspect | Change of character (CHoCH) | Break of structure (BOS) |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Against the trend | With the trend |
| In an uptrend | A close below the most recent higher low | A close above the previous swing high |
| What it suggests | The trend may be turning | The trend is continuing |
| How often | Rare, once per trend change | Repeatedly while a trend runs |
How to tell them apart on a chart
- Name the trend first. Then ask whether the break is with it (BOS) or against it (CHoCH).
- A CHoCH breaks the swing that defined the trend's structure: the last higher low in an uptrend, or the last lower high in a downtrend.
- Use closes, not wicks. A wick through a swing that closes back is often a liquidity sweep.
Frequently asked questions
Does a CHoCH mean the trend has reversed?
It means the old structure has failed. Many traders wait for a BOS in the new direction before treating the reversal as confirmed.
Are CHoCH and BOS only smart money concepts?
The labels come from smart money concepts, but the ideas are classic market structure analysis.
