Comparison
Piercing Line vs Bullish Engulfing
Both follow a red candle in a decline with a strong green candle. In a piercing line, the green candle closes above the midpoint of the red body but not above its open. In a bullish engulfing, the green body covers the whole red body. Engulfing shows a more complete takeover by buyers.
Piercing Line
bullish bias
A piercing line is a red candle followed by a green candle that opens below the red close and closes above the midpoint of the red body. Buyers recovered more than half of the prior session's losses.
Bullish Engulfing
bullish bias
A bullish engulfing pattern is a two-candle reversal: a red candle followed by a larger green candle whose body completely covers the red body. It shows buyers overwhelming the prior session's selling.
Side by side
| Aspect | Piercing Line | Bullish Engulfing |
|---|---|---|
| Green candle closes | Above the midpoint of the red body, below its open | Above the red candle's open |
| Relative strength | Moderate | Stronger |
| Bearish counterpart | Dark cloud cover | Bearish engulfing |
| Invalidation | A close below the pattern's low | A close below the pattern's low |
How to tell them apart on a chart
- Find the red candle's midpoint and open. Where the green candle closes relative to those decides the name.
- A green close below the midpoint is neither pattern.
- Both need a decline before them.
Piercing Line: confirmation and invalidation
Confirms: A following candle that closes higher.
Invalidated: A close below the green candle's low.
Bullish Engulfing: confirmation and invalidation
Confirms: A following candle that holds above the engulfing candle's midpoint or closes higher.
Invalidated: A close below the low of the engulfing pattern.
Frequently asked questions
Does the green candle need to open below the red close?
In the classic definition, yes. On 24-hour markets like forex and crypto gaps are rare, so traders often relax this rule.
Is a piercing line worth trading?
It can be one input among several, at support and with confirmation. On its own it is a weak signal.
