Comparison
Tweezer Bottom vs Double Bottom
Both describe the same low being defended twice. A tweezer bottom does it in two consecutive candles with matching lows. A double bottom does it over many candles, with a rally between the two lows and a confirmation level at the top of that rally. A tweezer bottom is a quick signal; a double bottom is a larger structure with a clear breakout level.
Tweezer Bottom
bullish bias
A tweezer bottom is two consecutive candles with matching or nearly matching lows after a decline, usually a red candle then a green one. The same low being defended twice suggests support.
Double Bottom
bullish bias
A double bottom is two tests of roughly the same low separated by a bounce. It suggests sellers could not push price lower a second time, and it confirms when price breaks above the high between the two lows.
Side by side
| Aspect | Tweezer Bottom | Double Bottom |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | Two adjacent candles | Many candles, two separate swing lows |
| Confirmation | A close above the high of the two candles | A close above the high between the lows |
| Target | None built in | Height of the pattern, projected from the break |
| Time to form | Two sessions | Many sessions |
How to tell them apart on a chart
- If the two matching lows are on neighbouring candles, it is a tweezer bottom.
- If there is a meaningful rally between the two lows, it is a double bottom.
- A tweezer bottom on a higher timeframe can look like a double bottom on a lower one.
Tweezer Bottom: confirmation and invalidation
Confirms: A close above the high of the two candles.
Invalidated: A close below the shared low.
Double Bottom: confirmation and invalidation
Confirms: A close above the swing high between the two lows confirms the reversal.
Invalidated: A sustained close below both lows means support has failed and the pattern is void.
Frequently asked questions
Do the lows need to match exactly?
Close is enough. The idea is that the same level was defended twice.
Which is more useful?
A double bottom gives a clearer breakout level and target. A tweezer bottom is earlier but weaker.
