    What is confluence in trading?

Confluence is when several independent reasons point to the same price area, such as a support level, a Fibonacci level and a trendline.

A single level is one opinion. When several separate tools, for example a prior swing low, a 61.8% retracement and a rising trendline, mark the same area, traders say the area has confluence.

Confluence does not guarantee a reaction, but it makes an area more likely to be watched by many traders at once.

    How traders use it

    • Start with structure and key levels, then check what else lines up.
    • Count only independent factors. Two indicators built from the same data are not two reasons.
    • Use confluence areas for planning, and still wait for a reaction.

    Example

On GBPUSD, 1.2600 is a previous swing low, the 61.8% retracement of the last rally, and the point where a rising trendline crosses. Three independent reasons at one price give that area confluence.

    Frequently asked questions

    How many factors make confluence?

Two or three independent ones is usually plenty.

    Does higher timeframe agreement count?

Yes. A lower timeframe level that sits on a higher timeframe level is one of the most common forms.
