    What is consolidation in trading?

Consolidation is a period where price moves sideways in a narrow range, usually between two clearer moves.

Consolidation is a pause. Buyers and sellers are roughly balanced, so price moves sideways within a range. Flags, pennants, rectangles and triangles are all kinds of consolidation.

The range's boundaries become the levels to watch. A break out of consolidation in the direction of the earlier trend is often treated as continuation.

    How traders use it

    • Mark the high and low of the range.
    • Expect choppy, unreliable signals inside it.
    • Use the side that breaks to decide the next scenario.

    Example

After rising from 60 to 75, a stock trades between 72 and 75 for two weeks. That is consolidation. A close above 75 suggests the uptrend is resuming; a close below 72 suggests the pause is turning into a pullback.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is consolidation bullish or bearish?

Neither on its own. Its context, and which way it breaks, decide that.

    How long does consolidation last?

Anything from a few candles to months, depending on the timeframe.
