3-candle pattern · bullish bias
Bullish Abandoned Baby candlestick pattern
A bullish abandoned baby is a rare three-candle reversal: a red candle, a doji that gaps below it, and a green candle that gaps above the doji. The doji is left 'abandoned' between two gaps.
How to identify it
- A prior decline and a red candle.
- A doji whose whole range sits below the red candle's low.
- A green candle whose whole range sits above the doji's high.
Where it matters: Appears after a decline, near a low.
What it means
An exhaustion low followed by a sharp change of direction.
What confirms it
The third candle itself confirms; holding above the doji afterwards adds to it.
What invalidates it
A close below the doji's low.
Common mistakes
- Expecting true gaps in 24-hour markets such as forex and crypto, where this pattern is very rare.
- Calling a normal morning star an abandoned baby without the gaps.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the abandoned baby rare?
It needs gaps on both sides of the doji, which rarely happen in continuously traded markets.
Abandoned baby vs morning star?
An abandoned baby is a stricter morning star with full gaps around a doji.
