Comparison
Morning Star vs Bullish Abandoned Baby
Both are three-candle bullish reversals: a large red candle, a small middle candle, then a large green candle. An abandoned baby is a rarer, stricter version where the middle candle is a doji that gaps away from the candles on both sides, leaving it isolated.
Morning Star
bullish bias
A morning star is a three-candle bullish reversal: a large red candle, a small candle that gaps or sits lower, and a large green candle that closes well into the first candle's body.
Bullish Abandoned Baby
bullish bias
A bullish abandoned baby is a rare three-candle reversal: a red candle, a doji that gaps below it, and a green candle that gaps above the doji. The doji is left 'abandoned' between two gaps.
Side by side
| Aspect | Morning Star | Bullish Abandoned Baby |
|---|---|---|
| Middle candle | Any small body | A doji |
| Gaps | Not required | Gaps on both sides of the middle candle |
| How common | Common | Rare, especially on 24-hour markets |
| Bearish counterpart | Evening star | Bearish abandoned baby |
How to tell them apart on a chart
- Check whether the middle candle's wicks overlap the candles either side. If they do, it is a morning star.
- On forex and crypto true gaps are rare, so most of what you see is a morning star.
- The third candle's close into the first candle's body is the key confirmation for both.
Morning Star: confirmation and invalidation
Confirms: The third candle is part of the pattern's own confirmation; a further higher close adds to it.
Invalidated: A close below the low of the middle candle.
Bullish Abandoned Baby: confirmation and invalidation
Confirms: The third candle itself confirms; holding above the doji afterwards adds to it.
Invalidated: A close below the doji's low.
Frequently asked questions
Is an abandoned baby stronger than a morning star?
It is usually described that way because the gaps show a sharper shift. Its rarity means there is little reliable data either way.
How far should the third candle close?
Commonly at least into the upper half of the first red candle's body.
